Suspect back in custody after maneuvering handcuffs to escape Tuscaloosa County sheriff’s patrol cruiser

A Tuscaloosa County suspect was able to escape handcuffs and flee law enforcement officers Monday afternoon, but he is now back in custody.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 8900 block of Argonne Forest Drive to perform a welfare check.

During the investigation, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Investigator Jessica McDaniel, 23-year-old Caleb Blake Herron was detained. He was handcuffed and placed into the prisoner compartment of a patrol cruiser.

When the deputy returned to his vehicle, Herron was gone.

Camera footage showed Herron maneuvered his handcuffs to escape.

An IPaws bulletin with the suspect’s description was sent to area residents. A tracking dog was deployed, and the Crime Suppression Unit set up a perimeter.

Residents started calling the sheriff’s office to report sightings of Herron. He was then taken back into custody.

Herron is charged with third-degree escape, fourth-degree theft of property and unlawful possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine.

He is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail.
